Conversion Ceremony

What does it mean to “return to Judaism?”

What is a “Baal Teshuva”?

In Hebrew, the word for “repent” and “return” share the same root.

When you repent, you are returning to who you were meant to be.

A “returnee” to Judaism refers to someone who is Jewish but was not Torah-observant at some point in their lives, or were never Torah-observant at all and has now dedicated themselves to following Torah.

It can refer to someone who is halachically Jewish, meaning someone who has a Jewish mother or grandmother. It is also used to refer to someone who has Jewish ancestry, but at some point the practice of Torah was lost because of persecution, such as during the Dark Ages, or forced conversion to Christianity.

This is the case with Benei Anusim, or the children of the forced ones, which refers to those forced to convert to Christianity, which is the case with many Sephardic Jews. When they return to Torah, they become Torah-observant Jews again, instead of people who are only tied to Judaism through their ancestry.

A returnee is called a “Baal Teshuva”.

If you are Jew or have Jewish ancestry, and you are taking these words in, and they are speaking to your soul, we invite you to return to Hashem, return to Torah. If you would like to publicly declare your commitment to Hashem and His Torah, contact us.
